IBRS analyst James Turner said most people did not really need a watch for traditional time-telling reasons any more, so demand for the Apple Watch would be led by those keen to have the device as both a status symbol and a further entry into the Apple ecosystem. He predicted that the ticket price would not put everybody off.

“As with all Apple products these days, the price point could be argued to be either a punishment for gullibility, or a more accurate reflection of the premium that customers will have to pay for a device or service which isn’t going to sell off their personal data,” he said.
