An IBRS client inquired about architectural standards after the recent review of their enterprise architect documentation. IBRS held a whiteboard session to assist our clients. The proposed session included specific context and information regarding enterprise architecture. The focus areas of the session included:
1. What is the best approach for developing the architecture standards and what structure should we follow?
Example structure:
- Desktop and productivity standards (MFA, anywhere anytime, etc)
- Application environment standards (interoperability, source of truth, etc)
- Infrastructure standards (dominate stack, Cloud first, etc)
- Data standards (meta data, data model, etc)
- Security standards (ASD Ess 8, security in depth, monitoring, etc)
- Accessibility (WCAG, etc)
2. Suggestions on a set of sample standards under each of the headings above.
3. What industry practices and Australian Government policies and guidelines should we adopt so as not “to reinvent the wheel”?
Example guidance:
- DTA’s design standards and Secure Cloud Strategy
- ACSC security guidelines, ISM and PSPF?
- WCAG Accessibility standard
4. How will the architecture standards be applied in the solution development lifecycle (SDLC)?
For example:
- During solution design and then check-points during the build and final implementation?
- How will its compliance and ongoing maintenance be governed by the solution design authority, architecture board, and IT Steering Committee?
