April 2026. Canva announced Canva AI 2.0, nudging the Canva enterprise marketing design platform from a graphic design and automation tool to an agentic platform. The update is as much about bringing together many AI components into a new, uniform architecture layer featuring conversational design, object-based intelligence, and memory library. This is in contrast to Adobe, which relies on a blend of its own custom and well-governed AI models and general-purpose frontier models. While the Adobe approach provides a broader range of choice, it is often viewed as fragmented and difficult to navigate unless the user has deep knowledge of the design environment. 

Canva’s platform leverages its own core foundational models, including Proteus, Lucid Origin, and 12V, which the company claims are up to 30x cheaper and 5x faster than general alternatives for specific design tasks. Canva also integrated recent acquisitions Leonardo AI for foundational creative power, Simtheory for agentic multi-model orchestration, and Ortto for marketing automation and customer data management. The suite now includes Sheets AI, Canva Code 2.0 for interactive experiences, and an offline mode.

However, it is the unification of these AI capabilities into an increasingly seamless platform, more than the models themselves, that provides the biggest gain for its clients.

This rearchitecture allows Canva to rapidly deploy design-centric AI, moving beyond basic image generation to power sophisticated professional environments. By using its own vertically integrated AI stack, Canva avoids the high API costs and latency associated with general-purpose LLMs, potentially offering a more sustainable cost model for scaled enterprise marketing content creation.

The integration of Simtheory and Ortto moves the platform beyond simple content generation into autonomous execution. This agentic capability allows the platform to scan emails, research market trends, and automatically generate multi-channel campaigns or meeting briefings without human intervention. This level of automation allows ICT and marketing teams to address the existing SaaS sprawl for digital marketing technologies. If a single platform can handle design, marketing automation, spreadsheet-driven data visualisation, and interactive code experiences, the argument for consolidating high-cost niche subscriptions becomes compelling.

However, this transition introduces complex governance challenges. The memory library feature turns every interaction into a building block by learning a user’s voice, style, and perspective from every document created in Canva. This raises urgent questions about the ownership of digital twins and acquired human personas, and the risk that organisations will use these models to replace workers. Furthermore, while Canva Shield provides indemnification against IP infringement, the locked-in nature of these personal memories within Canva’s ecosystem creates a new form of vendor lock-in that ICT executives must evaluate against their portability requirements.
