VENDORiQ: Salesforce Announces the Acquisition of Own Company to Bolster its Data Protection Capabilities

Learn how Salesforce's acquisition of Own Company is revolutionising data protection strategies and compliance measures for organisations.

The Latest

On the 5th of September 2024 Salesforce announced that it had signed a definitive agreement to acquire Own Company, a leading provider of data archiving, protection and data management solutions. Salesforce expects the transaction to close in Q4 of its fiscal year 2025, subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions. The acquisition comes at a time when organisations are increasingly focused on mitigating risks related to data loss, cyber-attacks, compliance and the heightened awareness of the need for robust data security measures with the advent of artificial intelligence (AI).

Why It’s Important

The acquisition and integration of Own will enable Salesforce to address customer pain points that have contributed to the perception that Salesforce’s native backup and restore options are inadequate for contemporary and future data protection, compliance and data analytics demands.

Own, previously known as OwnBackup, provides a range of capabilities that Salesforce native backup tools do not, particularly its ability to deliver point-in-time data and meta-data backup, recovery and comparison that complement its ability to provide audit trails that fully adhere to stringent compliance standards such as GDPR or HIPAA. Own also supports the export of Salesforce data to Snowflake and Azure Blob Storage enabling effective data management and analytics. Additionally, Own has made significant investments in AI and data discovery allowing organisations to analyse historical SaaS data and utilise it as a strategic asset.
