The $15 billion deal between Iren and Microsoft highlights the growing demand for AI processing capacity, driven by the expansion of AI applications across various industries. ​Partnerships with neo-cloud providers are becoming a critical strategy for hyperscalers like Microsoft, as they offer cost-effective and scalable solutions compared to building their own facilities. ​

IBRS senior adviser Dr Joe Sweeney states that while there is significant long-term demand for neo-cloud services, the future of these providers after their current deals expire remains uncertain. He suggests potential outcomes such as acquisition, transitioning to provide sovereign services for local markets, or upgrading to high-security services for government and defense needs. ​
